About Pinetops and Its Homes

Pinetops grew out of a work camp on Henry Clark Bridgers's East Carolina Railway in 1900, gaining a post office in 1901, a plat in 1902 and a town charter in 1903. Its sawmills, brickyard and sash and blind factory kept building materials at hand as the streets filled in.

Pinetops, in Edgecombe County, fell from 1,208 people in 2020 to 1,198 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 1.03 square miles. That makes Pinetops the third-largest town in Edgecombe County.

Pinetops has about 690 housing units, 3 percent of Edgecombe County's; about 55 percent of the town's households own their home.

Pinetops Homes and Their Attics

Early Frame Houses Near Hamlet Street

The 2023 county survey describes the town's early houses as frame and heavily altered. They take the shapes of nearby farmhouses: side-gabled houses one room deep with rear ells, pyramidal cottages, and gable-front-and-wing houses. In April 1920 the Tarboro paper counted 28 houses under construction, and many of them appear to stand along West Hamlet Street. A rear ell has its own roof, so it can hide a second, smaller attic behind the main one, with its own way in and its own depth. Each space is measured, and the insulation goes down level across both, with no thin hollows.

Brick Ranches in the Northwest Quarter

In the last quarter of the twentieth century, brick Ranches and neotraditional houses went up on curving, suburban-style streets in the northwest quarter of Pinetops, west of the surviving sawmill. Small ranches and later prefabricated homes filled streets to the northeast. If a kitchen from those decades has a boxed soffit above the wall cabinets, the box may be hollow and open to the attic. ENERGY STAR's method is to rake the insulation off the top of the box, cover the opening and seal its edges, and only then return the insulation to its place.

Attic Insulation in Pinetops

About 45 percent of Pinetops' homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

Built from 1940 to 1969, about 35 percent of Pinetops homes often have little insulation.

The Local Climate

Pinetops' center sits about 100 feet above sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Rocky Mount 8 ESE station, the best match for Pinetops. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,380 heating and 1,550 cooling degree days a year, so at Pinetops' station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic

About 77 percent of Pinetops housing units are detached single-family houses, 10 percent mobile homes. With about 690 housing units in Pinetops, read the figures as rough proportions.

Built from 1970 to 1989, about 25 percent of Pinetops homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.

Pinetops Insulation FAQs

Is anything inside Pinetops on the National Register?

None of the town's buildings is listed. The state places Vinedale, listed in 1982, near Pinetops rather than in it. The 2023 county survey added the town's surviving sawmill to the state study list, which is a different thing from listing. No local preservation commission is named for Pinetops on the state's 2023 roster. That leaves attic work on a house here free of any historic review.

Was there ever a rule that the early Pinetops houses be insulated?

Not when they went up. The state statute that links occupancy to insulation reaches only houses whose building began on January 1, 1978 or later. Every frame house from the railroad years came before that date, and so did any ranch finished earlier. Some owners have added insulation since, so the crew measures what is in the attic with you before topping it up.

Could the old insulation in a Pinetops attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 30 percent of Pinetops' homes predate 1960. If a Pinetops attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Pinetops need a permit?

Pinetops Town Hall can say whether Edgecombe County Planning & Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Pinetops; ask before work starts.
