About Duck and Its Homes

Duck, a resort town between Currituck Sound and the ocean at the north end of Dare County, became the Outer Banks' newest town in 2002. Its houses are mostly from 1970 on, little has been written about how they were built, and so the advice here goes by your own house and what its attic holds.

Duck, in Dare County, fell from 743 people in 2020 to 736 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 2.42 square miles.

Duck has about 2,800 housing units, 8 percent of Dare County's; about 89 percent of the town's households own their home. Only about 350 of those 2,800 units were someone's usual home in the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey; the heating and owner figures on this page describe those 350.

The Local Climate

Duck's center sits near sea level, 18 miles from NOAA's Manteo Airport station, the best match for Duck. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,890 heating and 1,700 cooling degree days a year, so at Duck's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Duck Insulation FAQs

Hurricane gusts have hit Duck hard. How can I tell whether a storm wet my attic?

Look in two places, the ceilings and the attic itself. The National Weather Service logged a peak gust of 92 miles an hour here during Hurricane Isabel in 2003, and 87 at the Duck pier during Dorian in 2019. After wind like that, look for new stains on the ceilings and for clumped, damp patches up top. ENERGY STAR reads damp insulation as a leaking roof, and the roofer comes first. Once the leak is repaired, we vacuum out the soaked layer and blow in new.

Is any house in Duck listed as historic?

None inside the town limits, going by the state's lists. The one National Register listing that carries the town's name, the Caffey's Inlet Lifesaving Station, is recorded as standing outside them. The state's 2023 list of local preservation commissions names only the Kill Devil Hills commission in Dare County. Nothing on a historic list governs attic work here, then. The condition of your own roof, wiring and ceiling is what decides the order of the work.

Does attic insulation in Duck need a permit?

Duck Town Hall can say whether Dare County Building Permits & Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Duck; ask before work starts.
