About China Grove and Its Homes
China Grove began as a crossroads trading place with a post office from 1823 and took its name from chinaberry trees that once shaded the depot. Chartered in 1889 as a cotton and chicken market of about 500 souls, it gained a cotton mill in 1893 and a roller flour mill in 1896.

Could my China Grove house be on a historic register?
Probably not. In town, the National Register names a single property, the China Grove Roller Mill, a three-story brick building of 1903 on North Main Street, and no house appears beside it. Rowan County, Salisbury and Spencer each have a preservation commission on the 2023 state roster, while the town has none of its own. Not much is in print about the houses here, so each attic gets judged by the house itself.
Why does my China Grove ranch feel cold along its outside walls?
It may be that the attic is thinnest right above them. This page's housing numbers put roughly half the local homes before 1970.
