About Granite Quarry and Its Homes

Granite Quarry was incorporated in 1901 as Woodside and renamed in 1905 for the stone dug from quarries along the Yadkin Railway. The town now calls itself a bedroom community, and fewer than half of its homes were built before 1970, so many attics here sit over houses of later decades.

Granite Quarry, in Rowan County, grew from 2,992 people in 2020 to 3,129 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 2.94 square miles. That makes Granite Quarry the fifth-largest town in Rowan County.

Granite Quarry has about 1,360 housing units, 2 percent of Rowan County's; about 79 percent of the town's households own their home.

The Local Climate

Granite Quarry's center sits about 800 feet above sea level, 5 miles from NOAA's Salisbury station, the best match for Granite Quarry. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,530 heating and 1,480 cooling degree days a year, so at Granite Quarry's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Granite Quarry Insulation FAQs

Is it all right to cover the can lights in my kitchen ceiling with insulation?

Only if the fixtures are rated IC, for insulation contact. Cans without that rating need a clear space of 3 inches on every side, per ENERGY STAR. Some kitchens also have boxed soffits above the cabinets, and a box like that may be hollow with an open top in the attic. We seal the top of a soffit like that before any insulation goes in, so air stops passing between the kitchen and the attic.

Is my Granite Quarry house listed as historic, like the old stone house?

Probably not. Just two properties in town made the National Register, and both are lone landmarks. One is the stone house Michael Braun finished in 1766. The other is a school for African American children, built in 1933 and faced with granite from a local quarry. No district has been listed. Rowan County, Salisbury and Spencer each appear on the state's 2023 roster of preservation commissions, but this town does not. Listing alone would not limit your own work anyway, the State Historic Preservation Office says.

Does attic insulation in Granite Quarry need a permit?

Granite Quarry Town Hall can say whether Rowan County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Granite Quarry; ask before work starts.
