Cameron was laid out on the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line, which reached it in 1875, and was incorporated in 1876. Most of the frame and brick houses along Carthage Street went up between about 1875 and 1925, while the town lived on turpentine, lumber and later dewberries shipped by rail.

Cameron, in Moore County, grew from 241 people in 2020 to 270 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 1.21 square miles.

Cameron Homes and Their Attics

Story-and-a-Half Cottages on Carthage Street

The Cameron Historic District's nomination names the story-and-a-half house with a front gable as the most common type on Carthage Street. The most notable are Victorian cottages with sawnwork in the gables, several with a rear ell, and the bungalows of about 1918 add hipped roofs and small dormers. In a house like this the upstairs rooms reach up into the roof, with short knee walls and slivers of attic behind them. Iowa's guide to problem spots in house framing singles out that wedge behind the knee wall as leaky. On Carthage Street that means three jobs, not one: the side attics, the low attic over the top floor, and any rear ell, each sealed and filled.

Attic Insulation in Cameron

If the joists show above the insulation in a Cameron attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

The Local Climate

Cameron's center sits about 360 feet above sea level, 9 miles from NOAA's Carthage Water Plant station, the best match for Cameron. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,170 heating and 1,640 cooling degree days a year, so at Cameron's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

NOAA estimated part of the Carthage Water Plant station's normals from nearby stations, so treat them as approximate.

Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.

Cameron Insulation FAQs

Do I need the Cameron historic commission's approval to insulate my attic?

No, not for anything done indoors. The town created its Historic Preservation Commission in 2022 and, in 2023, a local historic district drawn from the National Register district. Cameron's design standards leave interior alterations out of the certificate of appropriateness process. The same standards class new soffit vents, roof vents and gable vents as minor works, which do need one. So if your attic needs more airflow, talk to the town clerk before that part of the job.

How close can insulation come to the chimney in an old Cameron house?

Not touching it. ENERGY STAR gives 2 inches as the usual clearance for a masonry chimney, kept open with a sheet-metal dam. First, though, the crack between brick and ceiling is closed with aluminum flashing and a bead of high-temperature caulk. The district inventory shows both kinds of chimney on Carthage Street: interior chimneys in some of the larger houses, and exterior end chimneys on several of the cottages. Only an interior chimney comes up through the attic floor, so that is where the clearance matters.

Does attic insulation in Cameron need a permit?

Cameron Town Hall can say whether Moore County Inspections & Permitting, the town itself or another office handles permits in Cameron; ask before work starts.
