Brunswick Homes and Their Attics

The Jackson Brothers Mill Village

Alongside its two-story brick office, the lumber company put up neat single-story frame cottages for its workers, the state's 1998 survey of Columbus County records. The mill closed in 1932. By the time of the survey, the office had been turned into a private home, and most of the mill houses were intact on their quiet streets. No record says the company insulated these cottages, so on install day the crew measures what is over the ceiling in several spots before blowing anything in.

Attic Insulation in Brunswick

About 30 percent of Brunswick's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

The Local Climate

Brunswick's center sits about 80 feet above sea level, 10 miles from NOAA's Whiteville 7 NW station, the best match for Brunswick. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,910 heating and 1,760 cooling degree days a year, so at Brunswick's station, heating needs outweigh cooling. The state energy code marks Columbus County warm and humid.

Brunswick Insulation FAQs

Is the old Brunswick mill village a historic district?

Not on paper. Brunswick has no entry among the state's National Register listings, and no local preservation commission appears for Columbus County in the state's 2023 list. The 1998 county survey did record the lumber company's office, a brick building with quoins at its corners. It also named Brunswick among the towns that should get a survey of their own. Until that happens, no historic rules shape attic work in the village.

My mill cottage has vents under the eaves. Is it all right to cover them with insulation?

No. Those soffit vents are where outside air enters the attic, and ENERGY STAR says insulation should never block them. Under a cottage this size, the rafters come down low over the ceiling joists where they rest on the walls, which leaves little room there. So we set baffles at the eaves first. Each one holds open a channel for air above the insulation, and the insulation can then be blown right out to the walls.

Could the old insulation in a Brunswick attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 20 percent of Brunswick's homes predate 1960. If a Brunswick attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Brunswick need a permit?

Brunswick Town Hall can say whether Columbus County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Brunswick; ask before work starts.
