The Local Climate

Eureka's center sits about 130 feet above sea level, 11 miles from NOAA's Wilson 3 SW station, the best match for Eureka. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,060 heating and 1,840 cooling degree days a year, so at Eureka's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Eureka Insulation FAQs

Eureka's Methodist church is a listed landmark. Are the houses around it included?

No. The church's 1982 nomination draws its line around the church lot, and it notes that even the parsonage next door was kept out. Your house is not part of it. Listing ties no one's hands anyway: the State Historic Preservation Office describes it as carrying no restriction on what private owners do with their own funds. Wayne County's lone commission on the 2023 state roster is in Goldsboro, so attic work here is your call.

The old insulation in my Eureka farmhouse attic has dark streaks. What does that mean?

House air is getting into the attic through gaps. Per ENERGY STAR, insulation turns dark where it strains dust out of air moving through it. Each streak points to an opening underneath, around a wire, a pipe or the top of a wall. We lift the insulation aside, seal the gap and lay it back, because the darkened material can stay in service. Farmhouses here can be old: a 2009 National Register study describes a Eureka farmer's two-story I-house built about 1900.

Does attic insulation in Eureka need a permit?

Eureka Town Hall can say whether Wayne County Inspections Department, the town itself or another office handles permits in Eureka; ask before work starts.
