About Biscoe and Its Homes
Biscoe was called Filo until 1895, when it was renamed for Henry Biscoe, a lumber commission merchant, and it was incorporated in 1901. It grew from a rail stop into a rail town, and after World War II hosiery mills opened around it and Star.
Biscoe, in Montgomery County, grew from 1,838 people in 2020 to 1,887 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 2.91 square miles. That makes Biscoe the second-largest town in Montgomery County.

The Local Climate
Biscoe's center sits about 620 feet above sea level, 14 miles from NOAA's Jackson Springs 5 WNW station, the best match for Biscoe. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,040 heating and 1,780 cooling degree days a year, so at Biscoe's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Biscoe Insulation FAQs
Is my house in Biscoe listed as historic anywhere?
No, going by the state's lists. There is no entry for this town among the National Register listings for Montgomery County. The state's 2023 commission roster also shows only Mount Gilead with a local preservation board in the county. A later phase of the county's 2023 architectural survey is meant to record older buildings in all five of its towns. Being recorded in a survey is documentation, not a designation, so it puts no rules on attic work.
Can insulation be blown over the can lights in my Biscoe ceiling?
Only where a fixture is rated for it. ENERGY STAR wants a gap of at least 3 inches between insulation and any recessed can light that lacks an IC rating, the mark of a fixture built for insulation contact. The Census numbers printed on this page show that less than half of the town's housing dates from before 1970. If yours is one of the later houses with can lights, we read each fixture's label in the attic before any insulation goes in.
Could the old insulation in a Biscoe attic be vermiculite?
It could: about 25 percent of Biscoe's homes predate 1960. If a Biscoe attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Does attic insulation in Biscoe need a permit?
Biscoe Town Hall can say whether Montgomery County Inspections Department, the town itself or another office handles permits in Biscoe; ask before work starts.
