Robbins Homes and Their Attics
Town Lots of 1900 and Power in 1924
The railroad's owner had lots and streets drawn up, and the map of Elise was recorded with the county register of deeds in 1900. According to the town's history, generators at Carter's Mill on Bear Creek brought the area its first electric power in 1923 and 1924, while the first textile plant was going up. So a house built in town before 1923 got its wiring after the fact. Any circuits run before about 1930 may be the old porcelain knob-and-tube kind, and ENERGY STAR warns those can catch fire under insulation. In a house from the Elise years, we want an electrician's word on it before any insulation goes down.
Attic Insulation in Robbins
About 40 percent of Robbins' homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
The Local Climate
Robbins' center sits about 430 feet above sea level, 12 miles from NOAA's Carthage Water Plant station, the best match for Robbins. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,170 heating and 1,640 cooling degree days a year, so at Robbins' station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
NOAA estimated part of the Carthage Water Plant station's normals from nearby stations, so treat them as approximate.
Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic
About 77 percent of Robbins housing units are detached single-family houses, about 15 percent mobile homes.
Built before 1940, about 20 percent of Robbins homes can hide knob-and-tube wiring and vermiculite, jobs for an electrician and an asbestos contractor first. Built from 1940 to 1969, before the state's 1978 insulation rule, about 25 percent of Robbins homes often have little insulation.

Robbins Insulation FAQs
Would a historic commission review attic work on my Robbins house?
No. We checked the state preservation office's National Register rows for Moore County, and not one property in town is listed. There is no local preservation commission either: the office's roster of commissions, dated 2023, gives Moore County's three to Aberdeen, Pinehurst and Southern Pines. So the only questions about your attic are practical ones: what the house needs, and what is safe to cover.
Besides the wiring, what holds up insulating an older house in Robbins?
Mostly the roof and the chimney. Insulation that is wet or water-stained, ENERGY STAR says, means a roof leak, and the roofer goes first. A brick chimney through the ceiling needs its gap sealed and a metal dam to keep insulation clear of the masonry. The Census figures on this page show about half the local houses dating from before 1970. We look for both in the attic itself before any insulation goes in.
Could the old insulation in a Robbins attic be vermiculite?
It could: about 30 percent of Robbins' homes predate 1960. If a Robbins attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Does attic insulation in Robbins need a permit?
Robbins Town Hall can say whether Moore County Inspections & Permitting, the town itself or another office handles permits in Robbins; ask before work starts.
