Atkinson Homes and Their Attics
Houses That Arrived by Rail
The 1997 Pender County survey says ready-built kit houses caught on in Atkinson and Burgaw because their crates could be delivered by train. The same survey describes Atkinson houses of about 1910 and 1920 built a story and a half high, with dormers set into high hipped or broad gabled roofs. Upstairs in such a house, part of each room is inside the roof, and the short side walls have attic on the far side. ENERGY STAR names the spaces behind and beneath those walls as common leak points. Before adding insulation over the ceiling, we close and fill those side pockets.
Attic Insulation in Atkinson
If the joists show above the insulation in an Atkinson attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
The Local Climate
Atkinson's center sits about 60 feet above sea level, 6 miles from NOAA's Moores Creek National Battlefield station, the best match for Atkinson. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,750 heating and 1,930 cooling degree days a year, so Atkinson attics work in both seasons.
NOAA estimated part of the Moores Creek National Battlefield station's normals from nearby stations, so treat them as approximate. The state energy code marks Pender County warm and humid.

Atkinson Insulation FAQs
Is anything in Atkinson on the National Register, and does it touch my house?
Nothing in town is listed. The state's National Register list has no Atkinson entry, though the 1997 county survey recorded the Church Street business block, with stores from 1915 and 1923. A survey record carries no listing with it. The state preservation office's 2023 directory shows no local commission working anywhere in Pender. No historic rule governs attic work here, so the house itself decides what is needed.
Why is the old insulation in my Atkinson attic streaked dark in spots?
Dark patches point to air moving up from the rooms below. ENERGY STAR says the fibers catch household dust as that air passes, the way a furnace filter does. Under each patch, look for a gap: the top of a wall, a pipe or wire hole, the edge of a chimney. A house from the town's first decades can have plenty of them. We seal each gap, then rake the old insulation back over it, since stained fibers can stay.
Does attic insulation in Atkinson need a permit?
Atkinson Town Hall can say whether Pender County Planning & Community Development, the town itself or another office handles permits in Atkinson; ask before work starts.
