The town describes itself as nearly all single-family homes on lots of one acre or more, and its history traces the change from farms to subdivisions to the 1970s. The housing figures on this page tell the same story: most Weddington homes date from 1970 or later. If yours has a finished bonus room over an attached garage, it likely has sloped ceilings and short walls along the sides. Behind those short walls are wedge-shaped attic spaces, and ENERGY STAR puts the spots behind and beneath these walls on its list of usual air leaks. In a room that runs hot in July and cold in January, we look there first: we seal those side spaces, then insulate them.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Weddington attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 45 percent of Weddington homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.

Some 98 percent of Weddington housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1970 to 1989, 29 percent of Weddington homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.

Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.

Attic insulation in Mineral SpringsOnly if it has been designated as a local landmark. Weddington has no National Register entry at all. The town does have a Historic Preservation Commission, made up of Planning Board members, and its Town Hall sits in an 1894 house that is locally designated. Under state law, outside changes to a designated landmark need a certificate of appropriateness, while the inside is not reviewed. For an ordinary house here, no historic rule touches attic work.
Because the garage below is not heated, and the floor between them can be the weak spot. For a garage with rooms over it, Building America guidance calls for sealing the seams and holes in that floor, plus the rim joists and the top of the garage walls. The insulation must also press up tight against the subfloor, held there by supports. Batts that have sagged away leave a cold air layer under your feet. Insulating garages is part of our work, and we begin by tracing those gaps.
