Norman Insulation FAQs
Is any house in Norman on a historic register?
No listing falls within the town limits on the state's Register roll. Two Richmond County entries carry the Norman name, Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church with its cemetery and the old Bostick School, and both are recorded as standing out in the surrounding countryside. Only one Richmond County preservation commission appears on the state's 2023 roster, and it is Rockingham's. Attic work in Norman therefore goes ahead without any historic review.
What should come before new insulation in an older Norman house?
The roof, if the attic shows any sign of water. ENERGY STAR treats damp or soaked insulation as evidence of a roof leak, which gets repaired before anything new goes in. Wet material is vacuumed out and replaced once the roof is sound. The same list warns about attics with little or no venting and about fans that empty into the attic rather than outdoors. In a town incorporated in 1913, a house can be well over a century old, so the roof boards get a close look from inside before anything else.
Does attic insulation in Norman need a permit?
Norman Town Hall can say whether Richmond County Building Inspection, the town itself or another office handles permits in Norman; ask before work starts.
