Attic insulation in Pine Knoll ShoresIndian Beach is a small Carteret County town with frontage on both the Atlantic Ocean and Bogue Sound. Little has been published about its buildings, and the state's preservation lists show nothing here, so advice about an attic starts with the building around it.
Indian Beach, in Carteret County, grew from 222 people in 2020 to 231 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 0.57 square miles.
Indian Beach has about 1,750 housing units, 3 percent of Carteret County's; 100 percent of the town's households own their home. Only about 105 of those 1,750 units were someone's usual home in the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey; the heating and owner figures on this page describe those 105.

Indian Beach's center sits near sea level, 6 miles from NOAA's Newport/Morehead City Weather Office station, the best match for Indian Beach. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,780 heating and 1,710 cooling degree days a year, so at Indian Beach's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Readings change over short distances around Indian Beach: NOAA's Morehead City 2 WNW station, 10 miles away, averages about 2,480 heating degree days. The state energy code marks Carteret County warm and humid.
Some 8 percent of Indian Beach housing units are detached single-family houses, 44 percent mobile homes.

Attic insulation in Atlantic BeachHard enough to justify a look in the attic after a big storm. On the evening of September 5, 2019, with Hurricane Dorian still approaching, a weather observer in Indian Beach reported a 50 mph gust. ENERGY STAR reads damp insulation under the deck as a leaking roof. The roof is repaired first, and only then is the wet insulation pulled out and replaced.
Not on any state list we could find. The National Register list for Carteret County names nothing in the town, and the 2012 county survey, which recorded more than 600 historic buildings, does not mention the town at all. The 2023 statewide roster of preservation commissions gives Carteret County only Beaufort's. No historic review shapes attic work here, so the framing, the vents and the roof decide the plan.
Indian Beach Town Hall can say whether Carteret County Planning & Development, the town itself or another office handles permits in Indian Beach; ask before work starts.
