Attic insulation in Cajah's MountainGamewell, a community once known as Sloughs Branch, lies along Lower Creek between Lenoir and Morganton and became a town only in 1981. It is mostly residential, and about half of its homes predate 1970, so many attics here are older than the town.
Gamewell, in Caldwell County, grew from 3,693 people in 2020 to 3,713 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 8.11 square miles. That makes Gamewell the fifth-largest town in Caldwell County.

Lower Creek was one of the valleys where settlement in what became Caldwell County began, and parts of Gamewell's 1981 boundary follow the creek. The county's 1987 architectural survey found that the two-story I-house led from the 1870s into the early 1900s. These later farmhouses were light-framed, with chimneys on the outside gable ends, and added two-story wings often turned them into an L or a T. If your house grew that way, each wing can have its own attic, with its own access and depth, and we measure every one. A chimney on the outside of an end wall never crosses the attic floor. In a farmhouse wired before about 1930, an electrician looks for knob-and-tube before insulation goes in.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Gamewell attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Gamewell's center sits about 1,070 feet above sea level, 5 miles from NOAA's Lenoir station, the best match for Gamewell. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,850 heating and 1,290 cooling degree days a year, so at Gamewell's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
At about 1,640 housing units, give or take 184, Gamewell is too small for the survey to date its houses. For Gamewell, the nearest town with solid figures is Cajah's Mountain, 4 miles off: median year built 1976 and about 35 percent of homes built before 1970.

Attic insulation in SawmillsNo. Nothing inside Gamewell is on North Carolina's roll of National Register properties, and Caldwell County had no local preservation commission when the state last printed its roster of them, in 2023. The county survey did record a two-room academy of about 1870 near Gamewell, outside the town, that has been a home since the 1920s. So the choice to insulate or air seal your attic rests with you alone.
Only if work on it started in 1978 or later. The state law that made a new house meet insulation standards before anyone moved in covers homes begun from January 1 of that year. That was three years before Gamewell became a town. Houses from earlier decades went up with no such rule, so what the attic holds depends on the builder and on later owners. Before anything new goes in, we measure what is there in a few spots and look at the wiring and any flue.
Gamewell Town Hall can say whether Caldwell County Building Permits & Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Gamewell; ask before work starts.
