Como Insulation FAQs

Is my Como house listed on the National Register?

Very likely not. The state's list files just two entries under this town. One is Vernon Place, a two-story frame plantation house of the late 1820s standing just east of the old crossroads. The other is the Hare Plantation, which the list marks as gone. Neither is a district that takes in neighboring houses. In the state's 2023 list of preservation commissions, Hertford County shows only Murfreesboro's, so no historic review shapes attic work here.

My old farmhouse in Como has wings and later rooms. Does that change the attic work?

It often means more than one attic. The county survey describes the house of about 1890 as a cross of wings, the rear one longer than the front. Vernon Place's 1980 nomination notes a rear chimney, built outside the wall, that a one-story kitchen room added later now surrounds. A chimney swallowed by an addition can rise through that room's ceiling, and then its gap gets aluminum flashing, heat-rated caulk and a metal dam, the same as any interior chimney.

Does attic insulation in Como need a permit?

Como Town Hall can say whether Hertford County Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Como; ask before work starts.
