About Cofield and Its Homes

Cofield is a small village in eastern Hertford County, and not much has been published on how its homes were built. The 2011 county survey notes a 1914 church there and a plain front-gabled bungalow of about 1940, so we go by what each house shows in its own attic.

Cofield, in Hertford County, fell from 267 people in 2020 to 258 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 3.14 square miles. That makes Cofield the fourth-largest town in Hertford County.

The Local Climate

Cofield's center sits about 40 feet above sea level, 12 miles from NOAA's Murfreesboro station, the best match for Cofield. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,720 heating and 1,390 cooling degree days a year, so at Cofield's station, heating needs outweigh cooling. Readings change over short distances around Cofield: NOAA's Lewiston station, 21 miles away, averages about 3,140 heating degree days.

Cofield Insulation FAQs

Is any house in the village on the National Register?

No, going by the state's list. The closest listing is an unadorned frame house of about 1820 that stands between Cofield and Harrellsville. It was entered in 1982 under the Cofield vicinity, a label for places outside the village. Murfreesboro has Hertford County's one local commission in the state's 2023 roster. So historic rules do not come into an attic job here.

My older Cofield house was heated by stoves. What does that mean up in the attic?

Find the old flues first. Just west of the village, the county survey recorded a small frame tenant house of about 1900 that stoves heated. Its brick flues stand against the back wall, with a third in the rear wing. Where a flue like that rises through a ceiling, it leaves an opening into the attic. ENERGY STAR closes it with aluminum flashing and heat-rated caulk, then sets a metal dam so insulation stays off the brick.

Could the old insulation in a Cofield attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 25 percent of Cofield's homes predate 1960. If a Cofield attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Cofield need a permit?

Cofield Village Hall can say whether Hertford County Inspections, the village itself or another office handles permits in Cofield; ask before work starts.
