Conway Homes and Their Attics

Bungalows at the West End of Main Street

The 2010 county survey picks out a small group of stylish bungalows at the west end of Main Street in Conway. They are a story and a half tall and two rooms deep, with flared eaves, wide porches on brick piers, and side carports of the porte cochere kind. One is an airplane bungalow, whose top room pokes up above the main roof like a cockpit. A half story like these means bedrooms carved out of the roof itself, with short upright walls under the rafters on each side. Both ENERGY STAR and an Iowa state training text flag the wedge-shaped side spaces as leaky, so we seal and insulate them, and the floor beneath them, along with the attic overhead.

Attic Insulation in Conway

About 45 percent of Conway's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

The Local Climate

Conway's center sits about 100 feet above sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Murfreesboro station, the best match for Conway. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,720 heating and 1,390 cooling degree days a year, so at Conway's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Conway Insulation FAQs

Are any Conway houses on the national historic register?

None are. The state's register list carries no Conway entry at all. Northampton County's 2010 survey did write up buildings here, among them the railroad depot and the Main Street bungalows. A survey entry is a record for historians and puts no rules on a house. And the 2023 state roster of preservation commissions has no Northampton entry, so no design board reviews attic work in Conway.

Our Conway bungalow is close to a hundred years old. Who looks at the wiring?

An electrician, before we start. Conway was incorporated in 1913, and a bungalow from its first decades may hide the knob-and-tube wiring that ENERGY STAR dates to before 1930. The agency treats those runs as a fire hazard once insulation touches them, so live ones in the attic or behind the knee walls get dealt with first. With the electrician done, we seal the gaps and add insulation.

Could the old insulation in a Conway attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 35 percent of Conway's homes predate 1960. If a Conway attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Conway need a permit?

Conway Town Hall can say whether Northampton County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Conway; ask before work starts.
