Stallings Homes and Their Attics

One-Story Houses From the Highway Years

The town's own history says the four-lane US 74 came through Stallings in the early 1950s. People and houses followed quickly in the 1960s and early 1970s. If your house is a one-story ranch from that stretch, its roof is probably low-pitched. A National Register study of postwar houses defines the simplest ranch by that roof and a long rectangular plan. Out toward the walls, there is barely room to kneel between the roof boards and the ceiling joists. ENERGY STAR warns that this edge zone is where blown insulation can run short. We work it out to the wall line, with a baffle set at each soffit vent so outside air still has a path in.

Subdivisions Added Along Stevens Mill Road

In 2001 the town annexed land along Stevens Mill Road and Lawyers Road, which roughly doubled Stallings in area. In 2006 it took in the Emerald Lake and Shannamara subdivisions. The housing figures on this page bear it out: most homes in Stallings were built in 1970 or later. Where a newer house has several roof sections, each can hide its own attic pocket over a wing, a porch room or a garage. Insulation needs to lie at one depth across all of them, so we climb into every pocket and measure, not only the space reached from the hatch.

Attic Insulation in Stallings

If the joists show above the insulation in a Stallings attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

From 1990 to 2009, 63 percent of Stallings homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.

The Local Climate

Stallings' center sits about 750 feet above sea level, 6 miles from NOAA's Monroe Airport station, the best match for Stallings. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,060 heating and 1,710 cooling degree days a year, so at Stallings' station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic

Some 87 percent of Stallings housing units are detached single-family houses.

In 2010 or later, 20 percent of Stallings homes went up; check their air sealing as well as the depth.

About 11 percent of Stallings' housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.

Stallings Insulation FAQs

Is my Stallings house listed or protected as historic?

Nothing on record says so. There is no National Register property in Stallings on the state preservation office list. Its 2023 roster of preservation commissions for Union County shows Monroe, Waxhaw and the county, with no Stallings board among them. The town does have a Historical Committee, which gathers local history and oral histories. So no historic designation shapes work in your attic, and the choices are yours.

Can air leak into the attic through a box above our Stallings kitchen cabinets?

It can. Stallings filled in quickly during the 1960s and early 1970s. If your kitchen from those years has a dropped soffit above the cabinets, that box is worth a look from above. When its top was never closed, house air rises straight through it. ENERGY STAR says the fix is made from the attic side: move the insulation off the box, seal over the open top, then spread the insulation back.

Does attic insulation in Stallings need a permit?

Stallings Town Hall can say whether Union County Development Services, the town itself or another office handles permits in Stallings; ask before work starts.
