Power from its own town system (Maiden: a town system); 13,822 people, about 4 times Maiden's population
Attic insulation in NewtonMaiden, on Maiden Creek in southern Catawba County, was incorporated in March 1883, the year the Carpenter family's cotton mill near its center started up. The town grew around that mill, but little has been written about the houses its mill hands and merchants lived in.
Maiden, in Catawba County, grew from 3,695 people in 2020 to 3,922 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 6.65 square miles. That makes Maiden the fifth-largest town in Catawba County.
Maiden has about 1,390 housing units, 2 percent of Catawba County's; about 75 percent of the town's households own their home.

Census Bureau estimates for Maiden, 2020 to 2024 (± margin of error).
About 30 percent of Maiden's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Maiden's center sits about 900 feet above sea level, 10 miles from NOAA's Lincolnton 4 W station, the best match for Maiden. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,330 heating and 1,470 cooling degree days a year, so at Maiden's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
About 80 percent of Maiden housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1940 to 1969, before the state's 1978 insulation rule, about 25 percent of Maiden homes often have little insulation. From 1990 to 2009, about 30 percent of Maiden homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
In Maiden, about 78 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Maiden, an ElectriCities public power town, runs its own electric system. For gas, Maiden is in the Catawba County franchise of Piedmont Natural Gas, and about 20 percent of the town's homes heat with piped gas.
Program to ask about in Maiden: ElectriCities energy audits (the town's electric system), home energy audits for member-town customers; ask the town's utility office. Before a job in Maiden, check its current terms; the Catawba County page lists every program.
In a Maiden attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Maiden attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in BrookfordOne building is. Memorial Reformed Church, the town's first church, is a brick building started in 1887 on land the mill family gave, just southeast of the business blocks. The state's register list has no historic district in town. Its 2023 roster of preservation commissions shows only Hickory's for Catawba County. So no historic district or commission has a say over attic work on a house here.
The wiring and the roof come first. A house from the town's early mill years after 1883 may carry wiring put in before 1930. ENERGY STAR flags knob-and-tube wiring of that age as a fire hazard where insulation buries it, so an electrician deals with it before we add anything. If the insulation just under the roof deck is damp or water stained, a roofer fixes the leak next. Only then is the old insulation topped off or vacuumed out.
It could: about 20 percent of Maiden's homes predate 1960. If a Maiden attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Maiden Town Hall can say whether Catawba County Building Services, the town itself or another office handles permits in Maiden; ask before work starts.
