About Calypso and Its Homes

Calypso, named for the sea nymph of Homer's Odyssey, was settled about 1890 and incorporated in 1913. The county's 1994 study found two mail-order houses here, both shipped in by rail car: a Sears house of about 1914 and a ready-made Aladdin bungalow of about 1920.

Calypso, in Duplin County, grew from 323 people in 2020 to 340 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 1 square mile.

The Local Climate

Calypso's center sits about 160 feet above sea level, 7 miles from NOAA's Mount Olive 6 SE station, the best match for Calypso. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,120 heating and 1,720 cooling degree days a year, so at Calypso's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

NOAA estimated part of the Mount Olive 6 SE station's normals from nearby stations, so treat them as approximate.

Calypso Insulation FAQs

Why do the edges of the attic in my Calypso bungalow have so little insulation?

Likely because the roof is low where it meets the walls. The Aladdin bungalow the county study recorded in Calypso has a low gabled roof with its rafter tails showing under the eaves. Near those eaves the roof sits close to the ceiling joists, and ENERGY STAR notes that insulation can run thin along that strip even when the middle has plenty. We set a baffle against the roof deck in each bay first. Then insulation can be blown out to the wall plate while outside air still gets in at the soffit.

Is a house in Calypso on any historic register?

Not in town, by the state's list. The one National Register listing that names Calypso, a farm, is outside town limits. The 1994 county study did add the mail-order bungalow, a brick store block and the brick Methodist church to a state study list. That list is a separate thing from the Register. Duplin's single local commission, per the state's 2023 directory, is Warsaw's. So nothing on that front shapes attic work here.

Does attic insulation in Calypso need a permit?

Calypso Town Hall can say whether Duplin County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Calypso; ask before work starts.
