Aurora Homes and Their Attics

I-Houses and Gable-and-Wing Houses on the Old Grid

The county survey of 2009 found about a dozen houses in Aurora's proposed historic district that may predate 1900, and almost all are I-houses or gable-and-wing houses. One I-house from about 1900 has a one-story ell at the back, and the surveyors also noted five plain two-story houses with their gable ends to the street. A house built in parts like these can have an attic for each part: one over the main block and a lower one over the wing or ell. Each is reached, measured and filled on its own, so no section is left thin.

The Local Climate

Aurora Insulation FAQs

Is downtown Aurora a historic district?

Only on the state's study list, not the National Register. The Aurora Commercial Historic District went on the study list in 2003 at the mayor's request, and the 2009 survey redrew it smaller after several buildings were torn down. The state's National Register list has no property in Aurora, and its 2023 roster names no preservation commission for the town. No historic approval applies to attic work.

Hurricane Irene hit Aurora hard. What would storm damage look like in my attic?

Look for insulation that is wet or flattened, and for water marks on it and on the roof boards above. When Irene came ashore in 2011, the National Weather Service logged a 90 mph gust at Aurora, and rain in Beaufort County reached about 15 inches. ENERGY STAR treats damp insulation as proof of a roof leak. The leak is fixed first, and then the ruined insulation comes out and new goes in.

Does attic insulation in Aurora need a permit?

Aurora Town Hall can say whether Beaufort County Permitting, the town itself or another office handles permits in Aurora; ask before work starts.
