Its NOAA station logs about 590 fewer heating degree days than Magnolia's; 1,429 people to Magnolia's 875
Attic insulation in Rose HillMagnolia was incorporated in 1855 as Stricklandsville, renamed two years later for its magnolia trees, and grew as a rail stop shipping turpentine, rosin and, by about 1900, flower bulbs. The county's architectural study describes its academy, stores and churches, but says little about its houses.
Magnolia, in Duplin County, grew from 827 people in 2020 to 875 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 1.07 square miles. That makes Magnolia the fifth-largest town in Duplin County.

About 35 percent of Magnolia's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Magnolia's center sits about 140 feet above sea level, 9 miles from NOAA's Warsaw 5 E station, the best match for Magnolia. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,490 heating and 1,420 cooling degree days a year, so at Magnolia's station, heating needs outweigh cooling. Readings change over short distances around Magnolia: NOAA's Wallace 1 SE station, 12 miles away, averages about 2,900 heating degree days.
At about 440 housing units, give or take 124, Magnolia is too small for the survey to date its houses. For Magnolia, the nearest town with solid figures is Rose Hill, 5 miles off: median year built 1968 and about 78 percent detached houses.
Air sealing in a Magnolia attic covers wire and pipe holes, wall tops, the attic stair and bath fans.

Attic insulation in WarsawNot inside the town, going by the state's list of Register properties. The 1994 county study did put a few Magnolia buildings on the State Historic Preservation Office's study list. They are the two-story frame academy of 1858, a brick bank building from about 1911 and a dry goods store from about 1900. A study list entry is not a Register listing, and Duplin's only local preservation commission is in Warsaw. So no historic designation shapes attic work on a house here.
Two things above the ceiling: old wiring and any chimney. Magnolia has been a town since 1855, so some houses could predate 1930, when knob-and-tube wiring was still in use. ENERGY STAR rates that wiring a fire hazard once it is buried in insulation, so an electrician sees to it first. A brick chimney coming up through the attic floor leaves a gap that is flashed in aluminum and sealed with heat-rated caulk, and the insulation is held two inches off the masonry.
It could: about 20 percent of Magnolia's homes predate 1960. If a Magnolia attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Magnolia Town Hall can say whether Duplin County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Magnolia; ask before work starts.
