Dortches' center sits about 200 feet above sea level, 11 miles from NOAA's Rocky Mount-Wilson Airport station, the best match for Dortches. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,270 heating and 1,680 cooling degree days a year, so at Dortches' station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
From 1990 to 2009, 20 percent of Dortches homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest. In 2010 or later, about 20 percent of Dortches homes went up; check their air sealing as well as the depth.

Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.

Attic insulation in SharpsburgNot so far. The state's list puts just that one Register property in the community, listed in 1972. A farm the state files under Dortches was judged eligible in 1998, which is a finding on paper, not a listing. And even a listed house is not bound by it: the state preservation office says Register status sets no limits on owners who pay their own way. Nash County's one local preservation commission on the state's 2023 list serves Rocky Mount.
It can be. The Dortch House shows the pattern. Its nomination describes a two-story main block with a one-story rear wing whose gable roof runs crosswise to the main one, and that wing was taken down and rebuilt larger in 1942. The county's 2026 survey also finds gable-and-wing farmhouses common. A roof section like that can hide an attic of its own, reached its own way and filled to its own depth. Each one gets checked and brought to an even depth, with no thin spots.
It could: about 20 percent of Dortches' homes predate 1960. If a Dortches attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
